We Get By With a Little Help From Our...Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

With apologies to the Beatles, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are becoming our new best friends—at least when it comes to being safe on the road. An increasing number of consumer and commercial vehicles now offer ADAS features of various kinds, including:

Parking assist
Adaptive driving beam (ADB) headlamps
Night vision
Blind spot detection
Cross-traffic alerts
Advanced automatic emergency braking
Collision warnings
Driver drowsiness alerts
Traffic sign recognition
Lane departure warnings
Adaptive cruise control

The global market for these features is growing, forecast to increase at a CAGR of 9.7% to more than double by 2030, from US$30.9 billion in 2022 to US$65.1 billion by 2030.¹ Using technologies including lidar, cameras, radar, and infrared sensing, ADAS can be either passive, e.g., warning alerts shown to the driver, or active, such as automatic braking that will stop a car before it collides with an oncoming object, whether or not the driver brakes in time.

Some systems monitor the road and environment surrounding the vehicle, and some have their focus inside. Driver-monitoring systems (DMS) can now guard against falling asleep at the wheel or a sudden medical emergency such as heart attack. Occupant monitoring systems (OMS) can protect the safety of children in the back seat, or alert commercial drivers of an unauthorized passenger or falling cargo.
